Cozy Autumn Reads to Slow Down Your Evenings
There’s a very specific kind of reading mood that arrives in mid-autumn - especially around this time of year in Melbourne.
It’s not the fresh-start energy of January, and it’s not quite winter hibernation either. It’s softer than that. Slower. The kind of mood where you want something warm in your hands, a quiet house, and a book that doesn’t demand too much - but still gives something back.
This season, I’ve accidentally fallen into a run of genuinely cozy reads. The kind you reach for at the end of the day when your brain is done, but you still want to feel something gentle, comforting, and just a little bit magical.
Here’s what I’ve been reading…and what I’d recommend if you’re craving that same energy.
This season of slower reading sits closely with something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately - the idea that rest isn’t something you have to earn.
☕ Soft, Comforting & A Little Playful
If your ideal autumn evening involves a warm drink and something easy to fall into, these are it.
Espresso Yourself | Lara McKenzie
A hilarious, light, cozy paranormal mystery with a café setting (already a win). It’s easy to read, low-stakes, and has that familiar, comforting rhythm that makes it perfect for winding down. It’s written in blog style with a nod to the bookish community…there’s even a shadow daddy!
Brew Diligence | Lara McKenzie
The follow-up, and honestly- just as enjoyable. If you liked the first, this keeps that same cozy momentum going. Think: small-town energy, familiar characters, and something you can pick up without needing to think too hard.
These are your “I just want to relax” reads.
…and the good news - there are 3 other books in the series!
✨ Cozy Magic Done Right
This one shifts slightly - still cozy, but with a bit more heart and a touch of spice.
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches | Sangu Mandanna
This is the kind of book that lingers.
It’s warm, quietly magical, and character-driven in a way that feels grounding rather than overwhelming. There’s found family, a sense of belonging, and a softness to it that fits autumn perfectly.
If you like your cozy reads with a little more emotional depth (but still gentle), this is an easy recommendation.
🍂 On My Autumn Reading List
Because once you fall into a cozy reading mood, you kind of want to stay there.
The Pumpkin Spice Café | Laurie Gilmore
This book really does give the full autumn aesthetic. It’s got it all - seasonal small town setting, a woman starting over, small town café vibes, unexpected connections, and a little spice along the way.
Legends & Lattes | Travis Baldree
An orc warrior retires from a life of adventure to open a coffee shop in a magical city. As she builds something quieter, she finds friendship, community, and a new kind of purpose. It’s a cozy fantasy that’s basically about building a quiet life (hello café vibes…yes, I’m obsessed). Very aligned with the “slower living” energy.
The Bookshop on the Corner | Jenny Colgan
Books about books always feel right this time of year. This one leans into comfort, community, and starting over. It follows a librarian who loses her job and moves to a quiet Scottish village to run a travelling bookshop - very much “slow life reset + books + community” energy.
The Kind of Reading Season This Is
Autumn reading doesn’t need to be ambitious.
It doesn’t have to be the most intellectual book on your shelf or something you feel like you should read. It can just be something that fits your life right now.
🤍 Something warm.
🤍 Something easy to return to.
🤍 Something that makes a quiet night feel like enough.
That’s the kind of reading I’m leaning into this season, and it’s been one of the nicest shifts I’ve made.
