Title:Shibby Magee by Carrie Kabak
Genre: Character-driven Irish tragicomedy
Vibe: Quietly chaotic, reflective, and a little unresolved
Release Date: 20th February, 2026

The Gist

The story moves between Shibby Magee’s childhood and her 45-year-old self, exploring the events that shaped her while she searches for love, acceptance, and a sense of self.

It’s a deeply character-driven story, full of messy, flawed, and sometimes frustrating people: her mum, who abandoned her and her twin sister, Dorah, at a young age; a distant dad preoccupied with his best mate, a cruel nana who resents them for the mother being a “traveller”, and the slightly unhinged, but fierce, love they receive from Alice, their housekeeper/nanny.

The Irish landscape is beautifully rendered, and the story immerses you in Traveller life and its social complexities, grounding Shibby’s chaotic journey in a tangible, atmospheric world.

The Takeaway

This is less about plot and more about people; their patterns, contradictions, and lingering emotional baggage. Shibby is messy, impulsive, and at times frustrating, but deeply human. The dual timeline gives insight into how childhood experiences ripple across a lifetime, shaping identity and the struggle for self-acceptance.

It’s reflective and observational rather than neat or resolved, and the supporting characters add richness, humour, and heartbreak in equal measure.

Read It If:

  • You love character-driven stories over plot

  • You enjoy Irish settings and cultural immersion

  • You’re interested in complex family dynamics and Traveller life

  • You’re okay with flawed, unpolished protagonists

Don’t Read It If:

  • You want a tidy, linear story

  • You prefer strong character arcs or clear resolutions

  • You want a “likeable” protagonist
